I was recommended by SIAMB!, a micro-press based in Tulsa, to design the cover of a queer anthology by Samantha Ryan for risograph printing. The book, titled Words My Friends Have Thrown Away, is a collection of flash fiction based on crowd-sourced words bound to queer identities.
Two logos stacked. The top logo reads "datebox" in a white sans serif typeface in all caps on a pink background. Next to the logo is the word "before". The bottom logo reads "happily" in navy with a white heart dotting the letter i on a yellow background. Next to the logo is the word "after".
Samantha and I brainstormed how to represent the book's theme through design, and what stood out was the idea of overlapping elements to form new colors in the way varied experiences form this community. After reviewing and tweaking a range of initial concepts, we landed on the final design emphasizing the word "friends" by creating a rainbow effect through overprinting, and using imagery of crumbled papers.
The construction and guides for the Happily logo. Under the logo is the heart icon, and the letters "ily".
The back of the book for this project needed only a barcode, so I carried over the crumpled paper elements to balance out the remaining space.
